On The Heath

The postmans knock of fortnightly giro joy
AugustusBarnett's bureaucrats
Licensed collectors of the happy tax
Will deduct a quarter of mine
For a half ounce of mellow backy
And a litre of purple wine.

Up on the Heath for a liquid picnic treat
In the blue warmth of midsummer Hampstead's heat.

Ginger haired, dungeree'd frisby-kids play
While their gingerbread, plumb-duff stodgy mum
Cradles a freshborn bake
Plummy'd with a doughnut
Face filled with strawberry jam lotion
And soapy suds of sticky-care cream
Sugar-gentle for baby's soft skin.
